Certified wine flavour standard used to train professional tasters to recognize and scale the intensity of chlorocresol character. Chlorocresols contaminate wine through residues of disinfectants on production equipment, packaging materials and - occasionally - processing aids. They are also associated with admixture of phenolic detergents and chlorine-containing materials. 6-Chloro-o-cresol imparts an antiseptic, medicinal, plastic-like taint to wine and is one of the most odour-active chlorophenols known.
